Three Things to Watch

  • The fourth-quarter earnings season starts this week with several of the large financial institutions kicking things off. JP Morgan will report on Tuesday, Bank of America on Wednesday, and Wells Fargo, Citi and Goldman Sachs on Thursday. S&P 500 earnings for 2026 are expected to grow at 10%+.
  • A mix of data from after and during the government shutdown will be published this week. The November Producer Price Index will be released on Wednesday, while December Consumer Price Index (CPI) and retail sales come on Tuesday and Wednesday, respectively. Overall and core CPI are expected at 2.7%, which would be a slight increase in core inflation from the previous month. Inflation remains stubbornly above the 2% target of the Federal Reserve (Fed).
  • Plenty of Fed news is expected this week with the Beige Book on Wednesday and 16 separate Fed speakers. The next policy meeting is scheduled for January 28, and the futures markets currently indicate that the market believes the Fed will stand pat.

Three Things to Know

  • In 1994, 73-year-old Alvin Straight traveled 240 miles on his lawnmower to see his brother after a stroke, unable to get a driver’s license. The six-week journey later inspired the 1999 film, “The Straight Story.” (Source: @historyinmemes)
  • The IBC Index from the Caracas Stock Exchange (Venezuela) is up 188.6% year to date through Friday, January 9. (Source: Bloomberg)
  • Grateful Dead co-founder and rhythm guitarist Bob Weir passed away this week at the age of 78. The Grateful Dead was founded in 1965, and Weir was thought to have played more live concerts than any other musician. The band played a unique setlist at almost every show, performing over 2,300 different songs throughout their career. (Source: CoPilot)
